The central figure, Feelim O'Morrigun, an Irish butler, is likely to rank as one of Sean O'Casey's memorable creations. The whole play is rich in characters. There are Land Girls, Home Guards, conscientious objectors, combatant young Irishmen in the R.A.F., and a host of others, brought to life with all O'Casey's richness of rhythm and metaphor and all his comic power/ O'Casey's first play, "The Shadow of a Gunman" was produced in the Abbey Theatre in 1923. Three years later his second play "Juno and the Paycock" was awarded the Hawthornden Prize.
